were all looking forward to it. But she’s not well so we’ve had to call it off. We can think of
something else to surprise her.
4 I heard you were called in by the principal. Did he blame you for the broken computer? I ’m sure
he blew up like a volcano. But relax. He’ll forget about it in a few days.
5 I’m a little bit worried about Frank’s work on his project. It’s way behind schedule. If he doesn’t

6 Hi,
I won’t be going on the trip, after all. I had a fever that I managed to get rid of, and then my
parents wanted to ground me because I didn’t hand in my book report on time, so I worked all
night to complete it. Once I finally finished, a snowstorm closed the roads and that was that.
So come over to cheer me up.
Ralph
Why isn’t Ralph going on the trip?
A Because he got ill.
B Because of his parents.
C Because of the weather.
7 Hi Toby,
Come over to my place on Wednesday. We’ll be less stressed if we go to school together
on the day of the exam. You can come to my place the day before too if you want to go over
the main points. It usually makes me feel less anxious. And they promised our exams will be
marked on the same day, so on Thursday we’ll celebrate the results, I hope.
Lena
When do Lena and Toby get their exam results?
A On Tuesday.
B On Wednesday.
C On Thursday.

The open-air concert is in Stoke Park. Pick me up by 5:30. That will give us enough time to get
there by 6:00 so we don’t miss the opening ceremony that starts at 6:30. Rudy will be there an

Pat
What time will Pat and Gemma arrive at the park?
A By 5:30.
B By 6:00.
C By 6:30.
10 Emma,
If you want my advice, you need your own place. It will give you the independence you need
to finish your studies, and you’re already earning enough money to make this happen. So you
know what to do. Good luck!
Carla
What does Carla want Emma to do?
A To get her own flat.
B To find another job.
C To finish college.

The smartest dog in the world
Many owners struggle to teach their dogs to sit or fetch, but John Pilley, a retired professor,
taught his dog Chaser to understand more than 1,000 words. Chaser is an average-sized border
collie with round eyes, mostly the colour of cookies-and-cream ice cream, but with a black patch
right above her left eye.
Pilley studied dogs working on sheep farms and one night around the fire he told one farmer,
“You know science says that your dogs don’t really know their name?” The farmer responded:
“Really? Then tell me why, when I call out my dog Jeb or Fuzz out of four dogs and ask them to go
get Molly and Tolly, two sheep out of a hundred, they do it every time?” John Pilley realized he was
wrong.
Other scientists worked with monkeys showing how fast they learn through play. For Pilley, our
connection with dogs was more special. He was sure that working one-on-one rather than with
groups of animals must bring even better results. He believed it would be meaningful to work with
one dog, and that was Chaser.
Chaser was a two-month-old puppy when he started teaching her words. The first was for a blue
ball. He named it Blue, put it in front of Chaser and said, “Catch Blue”. Then he threw it to her. On
the third day, when she could bring him the ball from another room, he moved to another object. At
the end of the third month of her training, only five-months-old Chaser knew 40 words.
For three years, Mr Pilley trained Chaser for four to five hours every day. He showed her an
object, said its name up to 40 times, then hid it and asked her to find it. She learned to recognize
the names of 800 stuffed animals, 116 balls, 26 frisbees and a mishmash of plastic toys. Each of the
1,022 objects Chaser knows has an individual name like “Bamboozel” or “Flipflopper.”
11 What do we find out about Chaser from the first paragraph?
A She is black around the right eye.
B She likes cookies and ice cream.
C She belongs to a former teacher.

C His dogs’ names were Molly and Tolly.
13 What did Pilley believe about how dogs learn?
A They learn best when people play with them.
B They learn best when they are in a group.
C They learn best when they are alone.
14 How long did it take Chaser to learn 40 words?
A Two months.
B Three months.
C Five months.
15 How did Pilley succeed in training Chaser?
A He trained her several hours a day for three years.
B He showed her 40 objects a day for three years.
