0 I’ve never seen such an extraordinary play. The actors contributed to the exceptional
atmosphere. Everyone cheered with joy.

1 We headed towards Maksimir and realised we’d left the oven on. I know it’s on your way from
work, so please help out!

2 There’s a new notice on the office board. It’s very important that we understand the suggested
changes. Don’t forget to check it out tomorrow.

3 I tried to reach you by phone last week but I couldn’t get through. You were unavailable. I’d like
to hear from you.

4 Please do your homework before going to the book club, because you’ll either be too tired or
you’ll forget about it.

6 Hi Mike!
I forgot to mention I’m flying to the Isle of Wight next month for a certified course in Graphic
Design. I wanted to attend it last month but I was late, it was fully booked. I know it would be
best to wait until the holidays, when it’s cheaper, but you know me, I’m so impatient! Will keep
in touch!
Gemma

Why is Gemma not attending the course during the holidays?

A Because it was sold out.
B Because it was cheaper.
C Because she couldn’t wait.

7 Hiya Jen!
What a nightmare! There was a blizzard and the train was delayed. First I was stuck in a
carriage with a dozen other passengers and it was really stuffy, even when four of them got off
and took the coach. When we started again, an elderly couple got on at the next stop and we
were squeezed until we arrived at our destination. Imagine that for a holiday adventure!
Bella

How many passengers arrived including Bella at the final stop?

A Four.
B Eleven.
C Twelve.

8 Dear Helena,
I loved the exhibition. You know art is my passion. What I liked was how many artists in the
exhibition were exploring their dreams. They finally moved away from painting mythological
scenes. The use of colour and non-traditional materials was absolutely brilliant. There was
some confusion though about how the exhibits were displayed. Thanks for asking me.
See you soon,
Lisa

What did Lisa like about the exhibition?

A It wasn’t traditional.
B It was well-organised.
C It exhibited mythological themes.

9 Hi Eric,
So glad to hear you enjoyed the concert, too! The Choones were amazing. Despite not having
a solid voice, the singer appeared pretty sure of himself. He put on quite a show. I used to think
their songs weren’t catchy or romantic enough and preferred more soothing music like Colday.
My sister changed my mind.
Keep cool!
Monica

What did Monica think of the concert?

A She prefers a different kind of music.
B The singer’s voice was disappointing.
C The singer’s performance was impressive.

10 Hello Mikey!
It’s a pity you couldn’t join the reunion. The food we were served last night was fantastic.
The fish was absolutely mouth-watering. It made me wonder about the food I’ve been eating all
these years. As for the price, it was reasonable, considering the exotic ingredients the master
chef miraculously blended. We hoped it would be a bargain, since we know the restaurant
owner, but we didn’t mind. It was a dish fit for a king!
Lara

What does Lara say about the cost of the dinner?

A It was a bargain.
B It was expensive.
C It was medium-priced.

Task 3
Questions 11-15

For each question (11-15), choose the correct answer (A, B or C).

Reading aloud

While fewer children start reading in preschool with the help of their teachers, the majority begin
reading on their own very easily as a result of their parents reading to them. However, it is not
always that simple, and the choice of book or story by the parent is a highly important factor. For
reading aloud to be truly beneficial to children, the chosen stories must be interesting, realistic and
inspiring for them.
Young children often struggle with concepts that are symbolic or abstract, such as those found
in fantasy novels, which are much more popular with teenagers. Complex sentences and length
can also sometimes be issues. Stories dealing with familiar, everyday experiences and characters
they can relate to are often much easier to appreciate. Such stories also give children something
to discuss after a book is finished and often teach them practical knowledge they can apply to their
own lives.
To increase vocabulary, children need to come across words that they don’t know. Puzzled
by unfamiliar words, children will push themselves to learn because the words are important to
the story. When parents or teachers realise they have just read an unfamiliar word, they should
avoid explaining the definition right away. By rereading the surrounding sentences slowly, children
can be encouraged to use context to work out the meaning of the word. This teaches them not to
give up, which is an important skill they can use throughout their reading lives.
When children are encouraged to read what they want, they are motivated to read more.
Reading interesting stories aloud can help children develop the desire to read and understand
what words have to offer – without pressuring them to learn too many words too soon. With the rise
of the Internet and social media, reading skills are more significant than ever before. However, using
digital tools too early can discourage reading.

11 Who helps most children start reading independently?

A They themselves.
B Their teachers.
C Their parents.

12 What makes reading aloud helpful for children?

A Stories that are important to them.
B Stories that are motivating.
C Stories that are simple.

13 What do young readers find most challenging?

A Abstraction.
B Long stories.
C Language structures.

14 How do children react when they first hear a new word?

A They ignore it.
B They feel confused.
C They are discouraged.

15 How are good readers developed?

A By using digital tools.
B By building their vocabulary.
C By letting them choose their stories.
